Florida student tasered and arrested...

Note, that John Kerry says, during the melee, that this student's question is valid, and that he would like to answer it...

The University of Florida student who was tasered by campus police is Andrew Meyer, a telecommunication senior and former columnist for the Independent Florida Alligator.  He's been charged with a third-degree felony for resisting arrest with violence, according to a University Police Department report, which could mean up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000.

He faces two charges: resisting an officer with violence and disrupting a school assembly, and is scheduled to appear in court at 9 AM today. Within hours of the arrest, articles about it and video of the entire incident were posted by friends on Meyer's Website, www.theandrewmeyer.com.

At about 1 PM, Kerry was at the end of a forum at University Auditorium, and audience members were allowed to ask questions at a microphone. The person in front of Meyer was told he would be the last person to speak. Meyer spoke out and said he was upset with that, so Kerry gave him the OK.

When he took the mike, Meyer asked Kerry several questions, including why Kerry had conceded in the 2004 presidential election, why not impeach President George W. Bush now, and whether Kerry was a member of the Skull and Bones secret society at Yale University. When reminded that he was only supposed to ask one question, not three, Meyer responded in the video "He's talked for two hours. I think I can have two minutes."

At that point members of the student group sponsoring the event asked campus police to escort Meyer out, and at first, students can be heard cheering as he is asked to leave. but Meyer refused, and when officers tried escorting him, he resisted. Officers only partially got handcuffs on him. They moved him to the back of the auditorium, where he was put on the floor. The officers told him to stop resisting, and when he still refused, they used the stun gun, and he can be heard screaming at that point.

i guess you can get arrested for asking the wrong questions.

I guess I think it's funny that two of you have "buzzed" this video.
Thank~you, Lex for giving us some insight without predjudice, and, Bob, well, according to a youtube video that my son showed me last night, you can also get tasered for not carrying your "Bruin's Card" as is demonstrated in a video that is tagged with "california student tasered".
The young man in that video is tasered after a random search of identification at a library at UCLA. He is asked to leave, but before he can gather his things, several officers arrive to escort him out. He is heard telling them to not touch him and then the tasing begins. Unlike in the Andrew Meyer case, several other students start to protest here, and are threatened with tasers, as well.
This incident happened in November of 2006.
During the tasing, the young man can be heard, along with the rat~a~tat of the weapon... "Here's your Patriot Act!" and "Here's your fucking abuse of power!"

I still want my sons to go to college... I still want them to speak up...

Perhaps when they leave home,
I should buy them tasers as part of their college gear.
